What Keeps You Alive is a 2018 thriller film written, produced, & directed by Colin Minihan (Extraterrestrial & It Stains the Sands Red). In the early stages of the film’s development, the main characters were a husband & wife rather than a same sex couple. Both leads Hannah Emily Anderson & Brittany Allen were in 2017’s Jigsaw. It had it’s world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival 2018. Jackie (played by: Hannah Emily Anderson from The Purge TV series, Jigsaw, Shoot the Messenger, & Gangland Undercover) takes her wife Jules (played by: Brittany Allen from Jigsaw, The Prodigy, Dead Before Dawn 3D, & Extraterrestrial) to a remote cabin to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. Jules becomes suspicious when Jackie’s childhood friend Sarah (played by: Martha MacIsaac from Superbad, Battle of the Sexes, The Thaw, & Almost Anything) visits & addresses Jackie as “Megan”. She investigates, she goes over to Sarah & her husband Daniel’s (played by: Joey Klein from The Vow, On the Road, Painless, & This Life) place. She finds out about her wife’s dark past & questions her about it later on. Jackie turns into a completely different person & tries to kill her wife Jules after being exposed! Can this marriage survive this distrust & mayhem????
What Keeps You Alive really surprised me! It was very intense & I loved the isolated vibe it had. I’ve always appreciated the cat & mouse approach to cinema, they take full advantage of that with this production. There’s only a few characters here & that’s the best way to do it to focus more on the important roles. Hannah Emily Anderson & Brittany Allen were both great in this, I haven’t seen them in much but they have my attention now! I loved the instant change of Hannah Emily Anderson’s performance from loving wife to a psychopath on the hunt. Martha MacIsaac has grown up & changed a lot since Superbad, it was nice seeing her in a supporting role, she was a key character in What Keeps You Alive that set off the crazy chain of the events later on. The script had a few issues, it had some questionable actions by the victim but I can see them why it was done & it extended everything. It had some real brutal moments with eye catching special effects & gore. It was very entertaining & kept you guessing until the end. It’s definitely one of the best thrillers that I’ve seen or reviewed in a long time, it’s loaded with suspense. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
Let’s talk about the high definition presentation from Scream Factory & IFC Midnight! This 1080p (2.35:1) transfer looks great on blu ray! It only has 1 main location & it’s almost like another character here. It’s a great setting especially the lake & overall it has a very tense atmosphere to it. The English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is very clean & all the thrills are elevated in it. The music sounds really good on it & adds to the suspense! It has English SDH & Spanish subtitles. The only extra on the disc is the “Trailer” plus it has some other IFC Midnight related “Previews” before the film starts. I don’t see many critics or people talking about What Keeps You Alive but I hope more give it a chance after seeing this because it’s honestly a hidden gem. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
